Ugh, honestly, it’s not homesickness. I feel super comfortable here in Germany and I’m soaking up all the freedom like a sponge. But you know, even if I don’t have the closest relationship with my parents – I was in boarding school pretty early – it’s nice to have something familiar so close again. You do miss a lot when you’re in a foreign country, even if you don’t want to admit it, haha.
I notice that, for example, with communication. I love learning German, but it’s exhausting. Sometimes I just wish I could chat with someone without having to think about every single word. Just direct, without misunderstandings, in my mother tongue.
And yeah, the food! With my parents, I’m almost only in Chinese restaurants now. I know it’s totally stereotypical, but hey, I’ve heard Germans also often visit schnitzel places in Mallorca. 😉 As a Chinese guy, what you get served here isn’t really what you’re used to from back home, but it comes close. It’s like with me and my parents – it’s not the same, but it feels good.
My parents also brought me some familiar medication, which I think is great. For all of you who are now thinking of dried tiger penis – haha, please don’t! People here just have such stupid ideas, but it just feels good to have the familiar things in the familiar packaging.
Sure, I’m meeting a lot of new people here, but somehow Germans don’t always make it easy to form friendships. The fact that I’m traveling a lot right now and still don’t know which university I’ll end up at also makes it difficult, of course. The friends I grew up with, who know my story from the beginning, I miss them. You can talk to them in a completely different way. But I’m optimistic that when uni starts, it will definitely get better.
