It was humiliating to get yourself dirty. You’re brought up to be as clean as possible, and in that situation, you were just a slob. Somehow it was even worse because you weren’t being made dirty by someone else; you were getting yourself dirty. But at the same time, it satisfied that inner need for humiliation. That high that grows out of shame, because you also know that you’re in a safe place. Nothing can happen to you, even though you’ve hit rock bottom. Master, of course, finished eating much faster with his knife and fork than I did, being the little dirty pig eating out of a bowl.
